WEEKEND REVIEW

BLUES GO IN SEARCH OF THEIR FIRST CUP FINAL APPEARANCE FOR 35 YEARS

This Saturday Minehead travel to Portishead Town Reserves who they play in the Semi-Final of the Somerset Senior Cup, a game which was postponed last weekend. The Senior Cup is a trophy the blues have yet to win in their 124 year history, though they have reached the final in 1902, 1912 and 1925. The blues entered the more senior Somerset Premier Cup from 1950 onwards, which they won on five occasions, but reverted back to the Senior Cup when they returned to the Somerset County League four seasons ago.

Minehead were highly regarded as “Giant Killers” during the late 1970’s, knocking sides such as Swansea City, Wycombe Wanderers, Worcester City and Cheltenham Town out of the FA Cup, a competition in which they appeared in the Proper Rounds of on ten different occasions.
However cup success for the blues has severely dried up since the early 80’s, and should they win on Saturday they will book their place in a Cup Final for the first time since 1979 when they lost to Yeovil Town in the Somerset Professional Cup over two legs. Historians would need to look back a further two years to 1977 to find the last time they won a cup final, when they beat their old foes Yeovil Town, again over two legs.

The winners of Saturday’s tie will play Wells City Reserves, who beat knocked Burnham out in the other Semi-Final last Saturday.

Last weekend Minehead Reserves hosted league leaders Appletree Tone Youth at The Rec, who remain at the top of the table after a 2-0 victory.

This weekend the Reserves are at home again, hosting Stogursey in an evening kick off commencing at 6:30pm.
